Mother of Mandeville Toddler Fatally Shot Now Faces Criminal Charges

MANCHESTER, Jamaica — A 38-year-old woman has been formally charged in connection with the tragic shooting death of her four-year-old daughter, which occurred at their home in the upscale Ingleside community of Mandeville last Tuesday night.

Authorities confirmed that the woman is facing charges of child neglect and failure to properly secure a firearm and ammunition. She was interviewed by investigators and subsequently charged on Monday evening. Police say she has been granted station bail while arrangements for her court appearance are being finalized.

The child, identified as Gia Griniell, died from a gunshot wound to the back of the head. Police reports indicate the incident took place around 10:00 p.m. as the mother, Gia, and her 12-year-old sibling were at home.

According to the mother’s statement to detectives, she had put both children to bed and went to the bathroom when she heard a loud bang. Her licensed firearm, which had reportedly been left unsecured in her handbag, is believed to have been the weapon involved in the shooting.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the firearm’s discharge are ongoing.
