SEATTLE, WA – A Seattle mother, Denaya Young, has been charged with second-degree murder after her 14-year-old son died following an alleged beating with an extension cord.
According to reports from KIRO, King 5, and the Seattle Times, citing a police affidavit, Young allegedly struck her son multiple times because she believed he had not completed his chores. The medical examiner reportedly found 1,172 injuries on the teen’s body.
The outlets report the teen died on January 30th. King 5 states the medical examiner believes the cause of death was Sudden Inflammatory Response Syndrome, a condition where the body sends excessive blood to injuries, overwhelming the heart.
The police affidavit, as reported by KIRO and the Times, states that Young allegedly told police she “lost count” of how many times she hit her son. The teen’s three siblings were reportedly present in the home during the alleged incident.
It is unclear at this time whether Young has obtained an attorney or entered a plea. The investigation is ongoing.
