KINGSTON, Jamaica – Richard Jonas, also known as “Monkey Man” and “Jellani,” a carpenter from Queensborough, Kingston 19, was remanded in police custody following a Tuesday appearance in the Kingston and St. Andrew Parish Court.
Jonas is currently facing trial for a triple murder that occurred along Windward Road, St. Andrew, last May, with charges including murder, wounding with intent, possession of a prohibited weapon, unauthorized possession of ammunition, and conspiracy to commit murder.
However, Tuesday’s court appearance centered around a separate charge of unauthorized possession of ammunition, reportedly discovered during a targeted police operation. The unexpected charge took Jonas’s attorney, Matthew Hyatt, by surprise.
“Judge, I must admit that I do represent Mr. Jonas on similar matters,” Hyatt told Senior Parish Judge Sanchia Burrell. “I was surprised to see his name on the list in this court. I am not properly prepared for this matter, but I do represent him for other matters.” Hyatt also noted that his client had not disclosed any information regarding the new allegations.
Judge Burrell set a case management date for March 31st to allow Hyatt time to prepare for the additional charge. Jonas remains in custody.
