KINGSTON, Jamaica — Chairman of the Trelawny Municipal Corporation, Mayor Colin Gager, has rejected claims that the Government of Jamaica was responsible for an eviction exercise carried out in Coopers Pen, Trelawny, on Tuesday.
Gager said the eviction was conducted by a private developer who owns the property and has been involved in a longstanding court dispute with some of the residents.
In a press release, the mayor accused bloggers associated with the People’s National Party (PNP) of publishing misleading content about the matter and attempting to blame the Government for the eviction.
Gager condemned what he described as deliberate misinformation and urged the responsible use of social media, particularly when discussing issues of national importance.
He said the eviction was not a government-led exercise and maintained that the private developer was acting in relation to the ownership and legal dispute surrounding the property.
The mayor also disclosed that the Government and Member of Parliament for the area, Tova Hamilton, have engaged relevant state agencies in an effort to assist residents who have been displaced by the exercise.
Gager said efforts are being made to provide support to those affected while reiterating his call for accuracy and responsibility in public discussions surrounding the incident.
