Harford County, Maryland – 32-year-old Maya Dennis, has been charged with first-degree murder and child abuse following the tragic death of her 5 1/2-month-old daughter, who sustained multiple critical injuries.
The Harford County Sheriff’s Office initiated an investigation on Sunday, December 29th, after medical staff at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center reported potential child abuse. The infant, recently discharged from the NICU after being born prematurely, had been admitted to the hospital with severe injuries, including skull fractures, brain bleeds, a fractured leg, and other life-threatening conditions.
Dennis reportedly called 911, stating that her daughter was unresponsive. Despite medical efforts, the infant succumbed to her injuries on December 31st.
Authorities executed a search warrant at Dennis’ residence on Mayberry Drive and conducted interviews with witnesses and suspects. According to charging documents, Dennis made statements during the investigation that implicated her in the injuries sustained by her daughter.
She was subsequently arrested and is being held at the Harford County Detention Center.
Harford County Sheriff Jeff Gahler expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing it as a heartbreaking tragedy, especially during the holiday season. “It’s difficult to fathom such harm inflicted upon a defenseless child,” he stated.
The victim was one of Dennis’ six children. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the case.
