A 53-year-old Manchester farmer, who was apprehended in a multi-million dollar cocaine bust at Sangster’s International Airport in Montego Bay, St. James, on Wednesday, May 22, and charged last weekend, was granted bail in the sum of $1.2 million when he appeared before the St. James Parish Court on Wednesday, May 29.
The accused, Thomas Edwards, of the Hatfield community in Manchester, is charged with Possession of Cocaine, Dealing in Cocaine, Attempting to Export Cocaine, and Conspiracy to Export Cocaine. He pleaded not guilty when he appeared in court.
His attorney, Martyn Thomas, told presiding Judge Kaysha Grant-Pryce that Edwards had no knowledge of the drug being inside his suitcase and that he had no prior criminal record.
Reports indicate that shortly after 5:00 pm, Edwards, who was in the process of boarding a flight to Heathrow in England, was stopped at the security checkpoint, and his luggage was searched.
Approximately 4 kilograms of cocaine, with an estimated street value of JA$18,744,094.39, were found in his luggage.
The case is set to be mentioned on June 26.
