MANDEVILLE, Manchester — A 28-year-old man described by investigators as a repeat sexual offender has been sentenced to more than 15 years behind bars following a series of violent crimes committed in 2023.
The sentence was imposed on Friday, February 27, by Grace Henry McKenzie in the Manchester Circuit Court.
The convicted man, Matthew Smith, received 15 years and three months on each of two rape charges and the same term for illegal possession of a prohibited weapon. He was also sentenced to seven years and one month on each of three burglary counts and identical terms for three counts of robbery with aggravation. All sentences will run concurrently.
Smith previously entered guilty pleas in 2025 for offences carried out against five complainants — four women and one teenage boy. Two of the women were raped.
According to police reports, the crimes occurred between April and May 2023 in the communities of Hopeton and the Balvenie area in Manchester. Authorities said three separate home invasions led to sexual assaults involving all five victims.
In one attack, a mother and her teenage son were assaulted while gunmen held them at gunpoint. Another incident involved Smith and an accomplice who assaulted a mother and daughter while armed with a knife. A third woman was sexually assaulted in a separate event.
Investigators also reported that two tablet devices were stolen during one of the incidents. Law enforcement later traced one of the devices, leading to Smith’s arrest. The tablets were reportedly found in his possession at the time.
Following his arrest, Smith was formally charged and brought before the court, where the matters were concluded with the recent sentencing.
