Man Sentenced to One Year for Stealing Montego Bay Businessman’s Car

A man accused of stealing a motor vehicle from a Montego Bay businessman has been sentenced to one year in prison after appearing in St. James Parish Court last Friday.

Parish Judge Sasha Smith-Ashley handed down the sentence to 36-year-old Fidel Ferguson, of a Mountain View address in Greenwood, St. James, via the Zoom platform.

Ferguson was initially scheduled for sentencing on January 6, but the social enquiry report was not prepared at the time. He was represented by attorney Suwayne Phillips.

According to reports, on July 18, the complainant woke up to find that his 2015 Toyota Axio was missing from his driveway. Using the car’s GPS tracking system, he located it in the Spot Valley area but was unable to recover it. Some of his personal belongings were later found.

Continuing to monitor the vehicle’s movements, he discovered it had been relocated to the Greenwood area. Seeking assistance from an off-duty police officer he knew, the two went to a secluded, vegetated area where the businessman spotted his stolen car.

A tip from a nearby resident led the officer to a location a short distance from the vehicle, where Ferguson and another man were found inside a white Nissan. A second unregistered white Nissan was also seen in the area.

When ordered to exit the vehicle, a man identified as “Blacks” reportedly fled from a nearby house and hid in the bushes. A closer inspection of the vehicles revealed that all three had their ignitions removed. Additional personal belongings of the complainant were later found inside the house from which “Blacks” had fled.

When cautioned, Ferguson allegedly told the police, “Officer, you have to talk to Blacks about this because he is the one who causes me to be here.”

He was subsequently arrested and charged with larceny of a motor vehicle and receiving stolen property.

Ferguson was also one of five inmates who escaped from police custody at the Barnett Street lock-up on December 14, 2024. He was recaptured the following day.

His one-year prison sentence is now finalized, bringing an end to the case.
