A 47-year-old Texas man, Seth Carnes, will spend the rest of his life behind bars after pleading guilty to the brutal killings of his parents, including his father, retired District Court Judge Alfred Carnes. The Williamson County District Attorney’s Office announced the sentencing on March 31, confirming that Carnes will serve life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The murders occurred on the night of January 8, 2024, when deputies from the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a distress call made by Carnes’ 19-year-old daughter. She reported that her father had shot her grandfather. Upon arrival, deputies discovered 74-year-old Alfred Carnes and his wife, Susan Carnes, both deceased from gunshot wounds. Authorities recovered the weapon used in the killings at the scene.
According to investigators, Seth Carnes lived in a converted garage adjacent to his parents’ home. He admitted to committing the murders when questioned by authorities and was immediately taken into custody. Prosecutors believe the fatal incident stemmed from a disagreement that escalated into lethal violence.
Alfred Carnes served as a district judge in Williamson County from 1989 to 2013, earning respect and admiration from colleagues and community members alike. His death, along with the loss of his wife, has left the community mourning.
Williamson County District Attorney Shawn Dick released a statement emphasizing the devastating impact of the tragedy. “Judge Carnes and his wife Susan were beloved members of the community where they lived and served. The loss of their lives in this manner devastated not only their family but many within the community who loved and respected them,” Dick said.
“While nothing can undo the profound loss suffered by the family of Judge and Mrs. Carnes, this outcome brings a measure of justice and finality to a deeply tragic situation. We hope this resolution can offer some small degree of peace to the family members as they continue to heal,” the district attorney added.
Seth Carnes’ conviction brings closure to a horrific case of family violence that has deeply impacted the Williamson County community.
