TRELAWNY, Jamaica— Investigators from the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) are investigating the fatal shooting of a man during an alleged shootout with the police in Bunker’s Hill, Trelawny, on Monday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Gawayne Campbell, a resident of Bunker’s Hill.
According to reports, around 5:00 a.m., a police team was conducting an operation in the Ghetto Lane section of Bunker’s Hill when they approached a house occupied by Campbell. The police reportedly called out for Campbell to open the door, but were met with gunfire from inside the house. The officers returned fire, taking evasive action during the exchange.
When the shooting ended, Campbell was found with gunshot wounds. He was rushed to the hospital but was later pronounced dead. A .45 pistol was reportedly recovered at the scene during the operation.
INDECOM is investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting to determine whether the police followed proper protocols during the incident.
