SPANISH TOWN, ST. CATHERINE — A man was fatally shot by the police during an alleged confrontation on Old Harbour Road in Spanish Town late last night.
The deceased has been identified as 48-year-old Vernon Campbell, also known as “Bald Head,” a labourer from the same area.
According to the police, the incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. while officers were on patrol in the vicinity of a small gathering. Campbell’s behavior reportedly raised the suspicions of the officers, prompting them to approach him.
The police report that as they attempted to accost Campbell, a physical altercation ensued during which he allegedly pulled a firearm and fired at them.
The officers reportedly returned fire, hitting Campbell. A Ruger pistol loaded with seven rounds of ammunition was recovered at the scene.
Campbell was transported to the Spanish Town Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting, as is standard procedure in such incidents.
The incident has drawn mixed reactions from residents of Old Harbour Road. While some have expressed concerns about the shooting, others have pointed to rising tensions in the area and the challenges faced by law enforcement.
INDECOM is expected to provide updates as their probe progresses.
