ST CATHERINE, JAMAICA — A man was fatally shot by the police during an alleged confrontation in Old Harbour, St Catherine, early this morning.
The deceased, who has not yet been identified, reportedly engaged officers while armed with a shotgun.
According to reports, around 2:15 a.m., a police team was conducting an operation along Gordon Wood Lane in Old Harbour when they observed a man and attempted to accost him.
The police said the man, armed with a loaded shotgun, challenged the officers, who took evasive action and opened fire, hitting him.
The wounded man was assisted to the Spanish Town Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The police confirmed that a loaded shotgun was seized during the incident.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has been notified and is probing the matter.
