Man Drowns Trying to Rescue Stepdaughter in Manchester River

MANCHESTER, Jamaica — A 53-year-old construction worker is suspected to have drowned while attempting to rescue his stepdaughter from the St Toolies River near Porus, Manchester, on Thursday evening.

The deceased has been identified as Antonio Thomas, otherwise called “Stram,” of Kendal district in Manchester.

Reports are that about 6 p.m., Thomas and his stepdaughter were at the river when he noticed that she was in difficulty in a section estimated to be 17 feet deep.

Thomas reportedly entered the water in an attempt to rescue her but subsequently got into difficulty himself.

Residents later pulled both Thomas and his stepdaughter from the water. His stepdaughter survived, but Thomas was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Porus Division Councillor Claudia Morant-Baker has urged visitors to the river to exercise caution and seek guidance from residents familiar with the area.

Morant-Baker said there are hazards in the section of the river and warned that people who are not strong swimmers could be at risk in the deep water.
