Bail has been denied for 27-year-old Owayne Headley of Salt Spring, St. James, accused of the murder of 55 year-old Egbert Lloyd of Norwood Gardens in the parish.
Headley, who is represented by attorney-at-law Sherneika Jackson, appeared in the St. James Parish Court yesterday to face the murder charge.
The incident reportedly took place in Sam Sharpe Square on April 27.
According to court records, citizens reported hearing a shout and saw a man suffering from stab wounds and called the police
When the cops arrived, the deceased was seen lying on his back in a large flower vase with stab wounds to his upper body.
He was rushed to the Cornwall Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
In court on Wednesday, presiding judge Sasha Smith-Ashley asked the clerk of court to indicate what evidence the Crown has on file to link Headley to the crime.
The clerk stated that during a question and answer session, Headley said that prior to the incident, three men set upon him and beat him because they did not approve of his appearance because he was bleaching.
She went on to say that the crown was in possession of a caution statement from Headley’s mother outlining his confession to her.
Headley stated in his caution statement that on the day in question, he was returning from the hospital and saw one of the men who beat him while passing through the Parade. According to him, the man rushed at him, and he grabbed a knife and stabbed him before boarding a taxi to Salt Spring and disposing of the knife.
The clerk of court also informed the court that Headley was apprehended while attending the St. Ann Parish Court in relation to a wounding offence, and while attending court for that matter, he committed another offence of wounding against the complainant’s father.
“It seems as if the accused has a propensity to commit these type of crime,” the clerk of court said.
Judge Smith-Ashley was not inclined to grant him bail at this time as she said there are some issues that his attorney needs to explore.
He was remanded him to custody until July 11.
