Major Fire Engulfs Ammar’s Department Store on King Street, Kingston

Kingston, Jamaica — A massive fire broke out at Ammar’s two-storey department store on King Street in downtown Kingston on Sunday morning, prompting a large response from the Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB).

Acting Superintendent Courtney Thompson reported that the brigade received the emergency call at 10:13 a.m. The first unit from York Park Fire Station arrived to find thick smoke pouring from the building and immediately requested backup. Additional units responded from Half-Way Tree, Rollington Town, Trench Town, and other York Park stations.

Firefighters faced difficulties gaining access to the structure due to dense smoke and toxic gases trapped inside. Despite the intensity of the blaze, neighbouring buildings were spared.

Authorities said the full extent of the damage is still unknown, and a team of investigators was expected on site to assess the building and determine potential risks
