PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) — A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3 shook parts of the Eastern Caribbean early Monday, sending residents rushing to social media but leaving no reports of damage or injuries.
According to the Trinidad-based Seismic Research Centre (SRC) at UWI St Augustine, the quake struck at 5:16 a.m. (Trinidad time) at a depth of 24 kilometres.
The tremor was felt in Antigua and Barbuda, Montserrat, Nevis, and the French island of Guadeloupe, with residents in Antigua describing a brief moment of panic as the shaking rattled homes.
The SRC noted that Monday’s jolt came less than 48 hours after a magnitude 4.1 quake rattled Dominica, Martinique, and Guadeloupe over the weekend.
Officials are reminding citizens across the region to remain prepared for aftershocks and other seismic events, as the Caribbean sits in an active earthquake zone.
So far, authorities say there have been no reports of injuries or structural damage related to the quake.
