Jamaica News: Work is to get underway shortly on installation of a new bridge in Bowden Hill, St. Andrew.

This follows the award of a $33-million contract by the Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) to Chin’s Construction to undertake the project.

The bridge, on which work is expected to be completed over four months, will replace the structure that collapsed in February, affecting access to communities such as Airy Castle, Falling Edge, and Waterfalls.

Mayor of Kingston, Senator Delroy Williams, said that teams from the Ministry of Local Government and Community Development, the National Works Agency (NWA), and the KSAMC responded quickly to erect the structure.

He noted that “intensive design work” has been done to ensure that a solid structure is being put in place.

Mayor Williams, who was speaking at the contract-signing ceremony in the Bowden Hill community on Thursday (June 6), commended the residents for their patience as they await the start of the project.

He said that while the bridge is being installed, “we will do some work on the alternative road, so that we can make it as convenient as possible for all the users”.

He noted that part of the funding for the project came from the Corporation’s emergency funds, and used the opportunity to encourage other entities to put resources aside for emergencies that may arise.

Member of Parliament for West Rural St. Andrew, Juliet Cuthbert Flynn, for her part, said the community members welcome the contract signing to start the project.

“By the summer, things should be up and running for completion of the bridge in time for the start of the new school year. The children will have a nice, smooth road going up to the school (Bowden Hill Primary and Infant),” she noted.

The new bridge involves collaboration between the KSAMC and NWA.
