Knutsford Express Announces Price Increase Amid Rising Costs

Knutsford Express Services Limited is set to implement a price increase across all its routes, effective November 1, 2024. The company cites rising operational costs and inflationary pressures as primary reasons for the adjustment.

The current ticket prices range from approximately $1,000 to $4,500, depending on the route and passenger class. The anticipated increase will be modest, estimated at around 5-6% of existing fares.

CEO Oliver Townsend explained that the company has faced significant financial pressures, with expenses growing by 25% over the last year, totaling $1.6 billion by the end of the company’s last financial year in May 2024. Despite these challenges, Knutsford Express reported a profit of $309.4 million on revenues of $1.96 billion for the same period.

In the first quarter of the current financial year, the company’s net profit decreased to $67 million from $86 million in the previous year, primarily due to rising staff and toll costs. Administrative and general expenses for this period reached $450.8 million, marking a nearly 19% increase compared to the same time last year. To enhance customer experience, Knutsford Express is investing in staff training and upgrading its bus fleet and facilities.

While the price increase has drawn criticism from customers, who have pointed out service deficiencies such as the lack of Wi-Fi on buses, the company acknowledges these challenges and is working with service providers to improve connectivity.

Knutsford Express is also addressing changes in its courier business. Although it previously announced a discontinuation of certain international shipping and e-commerce services, the local courier service remains robust, offering same-day delivery throughout major cities and towns. The company is set to expand its operations with a new location opening in Morant Bay in January 2025, further enhancing its service coverage across Jamaica.
