KINGSTON, JAMAICA — Dennis Barker, a 26-year-old man from Slipe Pen Road, was sentenced to more than 30 years in prison on Wednesday after being found guilty of firearm-related charges in the Gun Court.
High Court Judge Justice Calys Wiltshire handed Barker the sentences following his conviction for possession of a prohibited weapon and unauthorized possession of ammunition.
The charges stemmed from an incident on April 7, 2023, when Barker allegedly opened gunfire in the Hannah Town community. Police received reports about the shooting around 4:15 p.m. and were provided with a description of a suspect on a motorcycle.
Barker was spotted by officers patrolling along Slipe Pen Road. During the ensuing pursuit, he was accosted, and a Glock pistol was recovered.
Barker received two sentences of 16 years and five months each for the firearm and ammunition charges. Justice Wiltshire ordered the sentences to run concurrently, with Barker required to serve at least 15 years before being eligible for parole.
Authorities continue to urge citizens to report illegal firearms and suspicious activities to help reduce violent crime in the area.
