Jevaughn Powell will represent Jamaica as the sole competitor in the men’s 400m semi-finals following a series of unfortunate events in the repechage round, which led to the elimination of teammates Deandre Watkins and Sean Bailey.
After missing out on automatic qualification, Watkins and Bailey sought redemption in the repechage round. However, their hopes were dashed under challenging circumstances.
Watkins did not appear at the starting line for his heat, resulting in a no-show and automatic disqualification from the competition. The absence from his lane marked an unexpected and disappointing end to his campaign.
Bailey’s situation was equally disheartening. Despite a promising start, he was unable to complete his race, pulling up with an injury mid-heat. His inability to finish the race due to injury compounded the misfortune for the Jamaican team.
As a result, Powell remains the only Jamaican athlete advancing to the men’s 400m semi-finals, carrying the nation’s hopes forward in the competition.
