NEW YORK – A judge has ruled that an Alabama woman who alleges she was raped by Jay-Z and Sean “Diddy” Combs when she was 13 can proceed anonymously in her lawsuit against the rap moguls, at least for now.
Judge Analisa Torres granted the woman’s request for anonymity in her lawsuit, but noted that she may be required to reveal her identity later in the litigation to allow the defense to prepare for trial.
The judge also criticized Jay-Z’s lawyer for his “combative motions” and “inflammatory language” against the plaintiff’s lawyer, deeming them inappropriate.
The woman, identified as “Jane Doe” in the lawsuit, claims she was living in Rochester in 2000 when she traveled to New York City and was allegedly assaulted by Jay-Z and Combs at an after-party for the MTV Music Awards.
Jay-Z’s lawyer has denied the allegations and has pointed to inconsistencies in the woman’s story, including her claim of watching the awards show on a jumbotron outside the venue, which has been disputed.
Combs, who is currently jailed on federal sex trafficking charges, faces a wave of sexual assault lawsuits, many of which were filed by the same lawyer representing the woman in this case.
This case is still in its early stages, and further developments are expected.
