Jamaican Among “Barbaric” Criminals Deported to Eswatini Under US Programme

A Jamaican man is among five convicted foreign criminals deported by the United States to the African nation of Eswatini, as part of the Trump administration’s expanded and controversial third-country deportation programme, the US Department of Homeland Security announced on Tuesday.

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the deportations on Tuesday. The five men — from Jamaica, Vietnam, Cuba, Yemen, and Laos — were sent to Eswatini by plane, though officials did not disclose when or from where the flight departed.

The Jamaican, whose identity has not been released, was convicted in the US of murder, robbery, and possession of a weapon, with sentences totalling over 30 years.

According to DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin, the men were all convicted of violent crimes, including murder and child rape, and one was a confirmed gang member. She stated that their home countries refused to accept them because of the severity of their crimes.

McLaughlin said the five had been “terrorizing American communities” and were now removed from US soil.

Eswatini, formerly known as Swaziland, has not commented on the deportations or the fate of the men. Civic groups there have raised concerns about the secrecy surrounding the arrangement, citing the government’s history of suppressing human rights.

The deportations follow a similar move in which eight men were sent to South Sudan earlier this year, after the US Supreme Court lifted restrictions on sending people to countries where they have no ties.

Eswatini, a small southern African kingdom ruled by King Mswati III since 1986, has a population of about 1.2 million and remains one of the world’s last absolute monarchies.

US authorities say they are pursuing more agreements with African nations to accept third-country deportees, although some, like Nigeria, have publicly rejected taking non-citizens removed from the US.
