Jamaica to Deploy Troops to Haiti in Multinational Mission

Kingston, Jamaica – Jamaica is preparing to send troops to Haiti this week as part of an international mission aimed at restoring stability and addressing the country’s worsening security crisis. The deployment, which is part of the Multinational Security Support Mission, will include forces from Jamaica, Kenya, and other nations. Jamaican soldiers have undergone extensive training in peacekeeping, with a focus on handling violent conflicts and providing humanitarian assistance.

Haiti has been plagued by a surge in gang violence and political instability following the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021. The mission, initiated by the United Nations, is focused on stabilizing the country, providing security, and supporting the Haitian National Police. Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness has emphasized the importance of Jamaica’s role in assisting a neighboring nation in crisis.

Vice Admiral Antonette Wemyss-Gorman, Jamaica’s Chief of Defence Staff, stated that although key preparations are underway, the deployment is contingent on finalizing critical resources. Jamaican troops trained earlier this year alongside Canadian, Bahamian, and Belizean forces to enhance their peacekeeping capabilities.

The move highlights Jamaica’s commitment to regional security and solidarity with Haiti, which has long faced socioeconomic challenges exacerbated by natural disasters and political unrest. The timeline for deployment is expected to be confirmed shortly, pending the resolution of logistical matters.
