Jamaica and Ghana are set to strengthen cooperation in healthcare, education, tourism, trade and air travel following high-level talks between Prime Minister Andrew Holness and Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama in Kingston on Monday.
President Mahama is on a State Visit to Jamaica through Wednesday, accompanied by Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and Deputy Defence Minister Ernest Brogya Genfi.
Speaking after the bilateral meeting, Holness said the visit builds on the longstanding relationship between both countries and recent agreements covering healthcare recruitment, defence cooperation, and arts and culture.
He noted that the healthcare partnership is already producing results, with Ghanaian nurses expected to arrive in Jamaica to help strengthen the island’s healthcare system.
One of the major proposals discussed was the introduction of direct flights between Accra and Montego Bay, which Holness said would boost tourism, trade and investment.
The Prime Minister also highlighted growing collaboration in logistics, tourism, hospitality, agro-processing, information and communications technology (ICT), fintech and the creative industries following a recent Jamaica-Ghana business mission.
Holness said Jamaica hopes to benefit from Ghana’s expanding fintech sector while both countries continue developing their ports as regional logistics hubs.
He added that stronger links between Jamaican and Ghanaian ports would improve access to markets across the Caribbean, Latin America and Africa, particularly under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
President Mahama said Jamaica and Ghana have a shared vision of becoming regional economic hubs and pledged to deepen cooperation through increased trade, investment and business partnerships.
He also confirmed that Ghana intends to fast-track approval of the bilateral air services agreement currently before its Parliament, paving the way for direct commercial flights between Accra and Montego Bay.
Mahama said discussions also covered exchange programmes for healthcare workers and teachers, allowing professionals from both countries to gain training and share expertise.
He described the visit as productive, saying both governments have agreed on a clear roadmap to deepen Ghana-Jamaica relations and expand cooperation across multiple sectors.
