AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS — Reggae singer Jah Cure, born Siccature Alcock, was remanded in custody this week in the Netherlands after a court-appointed interpreter failed to appear for a substantive hearing in his ongoing legal battle.
According to a representative from the Netherlands Prosecution Service, the June 18 hearing — which was scheduled to determine whether Dutch prosecutors can pursue an attempted murder charge against the singer — was adjourned at the last minute due to the interpreter’s absence.
“The substantive hearing was scheduled but because the interpreter was unable to attend at the last minute, the case has been adjourned,” the spokesperson confirmed.
The hearing has now been rescheduled for October 9 at 2 p.m., and Jah Cure will remain in custody until that date.
The Grammy-nominated artist, known for hits like Unconditional Love and Longing For, has been in pre-trial detention in Amsterdam as prosecutors continue their appeal of a 2022 ruling. In March 2022, Jah Cure was convicted of attempted manslaughter and sentenced to six years in prison following the October 2021 stabbing of Dutch concert promoter Nicardo ‘Papa’ Blake over an alleged dispute concerning unpaid performance fees.
He was, however, acquitted of the more serious charge of attempted murder, as judges ruled there was no evidence of premeditation. Prosecutors later filed an appeal, seeking to have the attempted murder charge reinstated.
Over recent months, Dutch authorities have heard witness testimony related to the prosecution’s appeal. The now-delayed substantive hearing would have addressed the legal viability of reopening the case on the more serious count.
Jah Cure’s legal team has also appealed the attempted manslaughter conviction.
