New Orleans, LA – January 1, 2025 – A US Army veteran identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar rammed a pickup truck into a crowd of New Year’s revelers in New Orleans, killing at least 15 people and injuring dozens more. The FBI is investigating the incident as a terrorist attack.
Jabbar, a 42-year-old US citizen from Texas, served in the military as an IT specialist and deployed to Afghanistan. Authorities believe he may have had accomplices and are conducting searches in New Orleans and other states.
An ISIS flag was found in the vehicle, and President Biden confirmed Jabbar posted videos online expressing support for the terrorist group. The attack began around 3:15 am near Bourbon Street, a popular tourist destination filled with people celebrating the new year. Jabbar reportedly exited the truck after the initial attack and was killed in a shootout with police. Two officers were wounded.
The FBI confirmed 15 fatalities, including Nikyra Cheyenne Dedeaux, a recent high school graduate, and Reggie Hunter, a father of two. Several others were identified as victims, including a former college football player. The city is mourning the loss of innocent lives and vowing to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Law enforcement officials are investigating possible connections between this attack and the explosion of a Tesla Cybertruck outside a hotel owned by the President-elect in Las Vegas on Wednesday. No links have been established yet.
