Spanish Town, St Catherine – Authorities have launched an investigation into the fatal shooting of a man by the police on Thursday night after he allegedly attempted to disarm an officer during a raid.
According to reports, the incident occurred around 7:15 p.m. when police conducted a snap raid in search of a suspect linked to a murder that took place on Wednesday. Law enforcement officers reportedly spotted a man matching the description of the suspect near a bar and attempted to apprehend him.
Upon seeing the police, the man allegedly fled through a gate and entered a house along Oxford Road, with officers in pursuit. Inside the residence, police reportedly informed him of the reason for their presence, but he then grabbed hold of one officer’s firearm, leading to a struggle.
During the altercation, the man reportedly struck the policeman before being shot and injured by another member of the law enforcement team. He was transported to the Spanish Town Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His identity has not yet been released.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has since launched a probe into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Further details are expected as the investigation progresses.
