Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has initiated a formal investigation into the fatal shooting of a man by police officers during an early morning operation in Mount Industry, St Andrew, on Wednesday.
The deceased has been identified as 37-year-old labourer Joshimar Grey, also known as ‘Pops,’ of Gordon Town, St Andrew.
According to police reports, around 4:30 a.m., a law enforcement team was conducting an operation in the area when they were allegedly confronted by Grey, who was armed with a handgun. The police reportedly returned fire, striking Grey.
Authorities say a Walther PPK pistol, along with a magazine containing five rounds of nine-millimetre ammunition, was recovered from the scene.
Grey was transported to the Kingston Public Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
INDECOM has since launched an independent investigation into the incident, as is customary in cases involving police shootings. The agency is expected to gather statements from officers involved, forensic evidence, and witness testimonies to determine the circumstances surrounding Grey’s death.
Residents of the community have expressed mixed reactions, with some supporting the police’s account of events, while others have raised concerns about the use of force.
INDECOM is urging anyone with relevant information to come forward as they continue their inquiry into the matter.
