The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has launched a probe into the shooting of a man by a policeman in Bannister district, Old Harbour, St. Catherine, on Monday night.
According to police reports, the incident occurred around 9:00 p.m. when the policeman, who was at home with family members listening to music, was approached by the man, who demanded that the music be turned off.
The man allegedly pushed past the policeman and unplugged an extension cord. After being instructed to leave, the man reportedly ran a short distance, picked up a stone, and appeared ready to throw it.
In response, the policeman fired his service weapon, hitting the man in the left leg.
The injured man was transported to the Spanish Town Hospital, where he was treated and later released.
Subsequent investigations revealed that the man has mental health challenges.
INDECOM is currently reviewing the circumstances of the shooting, including the use of force by the officer. The incident has raised questions about the handling of individuals with mental health issues during police interactions.
The matter remains under active investigation.
