“I Feel Unstoppable”: Long Island Man Makes History as First in New York Cured of Sickle Cell Anemia

LONG ISLAND, NY — For 21 years, Sebastien Beauzile lived with constant pain, fatigue, and the looming limitations of sickle cell anemia. But today, he’s walking into a future once thought impossible—free from the disease that shaped his entire life.

Beauzile has become the first person in New York to be cured of sickle cell anemia, thanks to a revolutionary treatment at Cohen Children’s Medical Center.

“Sickle cell was like a blockade for me—now it’s like a wall that I just jumped over,” he said.

From a Lifetime of Pain to a Medical Breakthrough

Sickle cell anemia, a devastating genetic disorder that causes misshapen red blood cells, has tormented patients for generations. The disease, first documented in medical texts in 1910, has long been considered a lifelong battle with no true cure.

That changed with Lyfgenia, a groundbreaking gene therapy that uses a patient’s own bone marrow to create normal red blood cells.

“We feel blessed to be the first to be able to offer this,” said Dr. Jonathan Fish with Cohen Children’s Medical Center.

Dr. Banu Aygun, another physician involved in the treatment, said the medical team was thrilled to use Beauzile’s own stem cells to transform his health.

“When we could use Sebastien’s own stem cells to do this therapy, we were delighted,” she said.

After more than a century without a cure, the reality of this breakthrough is still sinking in—even for doctors.

“And here we are more than 100 years later, and this is the first cure you are seeing,” said Dr. Jeffrey Lipton.

A Future Without Limits

At a press conference, Beauzile took a moment to thank the medical teams who helped him reclaim his life.

“To the Med Four team, to the hematology team, the transplant team—you guys have really changed my life,” he said.

For his mother, Magda Lamour, who has been taking him to this hospital since he was two months old, the moment was overwhelming.

“There are not enough words to show you how grateful I am,” she said.

Now, for the first time, Beauzile is making plans for a life without the constraints of sickle cell. He hopes to travel, work out, and focus on his education—possibly even entering the medical field himself.

“Amazing! I can’t wait to get back to my day-to-day life because now I feel unstoppable,” he said.

Sickle cell anemia primarily affects people of African, Mediterranean, and Middle Eastern descent—communities that have long waited for hope. Now, Cohen Children’s Medical Center wants to expand access to this life-changing therapy and bring that hope to others.
