Kingston, Jamaica — The Ministry of Health and Wellness is urging residents to take extra safety measures as strong winds and lower temperatures affect sections of the island.
In an advisory released Monday, the ministry cautioned that gusty conditions increase the likelihood of airborne debris, which can lead to injuries. Citizens are being encouraged to reduce unnecessary outdoor activity and proceed carefully when conducting cleanup or repair work.
Officials also highlighted health risks linked to colder weather, particularly for vulnerable groups such as senior citizens and individuals living with sickle cell disease. The warning comes as Jamaica continues to experience the seasonal circulation of influenza.
The ministry recommended that individuals dress appropriately to maintain body warmth while also guarding against viral infections. It further reminded the public that flu vaccinations are available at no cost through health centres islandwide.
Guidance was also issued regarding generator safety in the event of electricity disruptions caused by high winds. The ministry stressed that generators must not be operated inside homes or enclosed areas and should be positioned a safe distance away from buildings due to heat produced by the units. Residents were additionally advised to avoid using heat-generating appliances, including toasters and hair dryers, when running generator power, and to ensure outlets match the generator’s voltage rating.
Anyone who becomes sick or sustains an injury during the period of inclement weather is being advised to seek prompt medical attention at the nearest health facility or private physician.
The advisory follows a recent outlook from the Meteorological Service of Jamaica, which projected gusty winds, increased rainfall, and cooler temperatures associated with a strong cold front impacting the western Caribbean and affecting Jamaica from late weekend into the early part of the week.
