Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr. Christopher Tufton, is currently receiving treatment for a broken wrist at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) following a cycling accident on Sunday morning. The incident occurred on Charlemont Avenue in St. Andrew, where Tufton was struck by a motor vehicle driven by a popular dancehall artiste.
Dr. Tufton, an avid cyclist and advocate for physical fitness, confirmed the accident in a social media post, expressing his gratitude for the support and care he has received. “Well this Sunday wasn’t planned! Took a fall this morning on my bicycle. Counting myself very lucky because it could have been worse!! Thanks to God and to all who have me in their prayers and sent messages,” Tufton wrote. He also thanked the driver, identified as dancehall artiste Valiant, for quickly rushing him to the hospital.

Witnesses at the scene noted that Dr. Tufton was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, which likely prevented more severe injuries. This incident marks the second cycling-related injury for the minister in recent years. Last year, Dr. Tufton was injured in a similar spill during a group ride in memory of cyclist Winston “Blacks” Brown.
In his public statements, Dr. Tufton reiterated the importance of safety for cyclists, emphasizing the life-saving potential of wearing a helmet. “Following the incident, I want to remind all cyclists to always wear a helmet. It can make all the difference,” he said.
Dr. Tufton has been a vocal proponent of engaging in physical activity to mitigate the risks of non-communicable diseases, often promoting cycling as a healthy and sustainable mode of exercise. Despite this setback, his commitment to health and wellness remains steadfast.
