Hanover, Jamaica — In a significant move to protect the elderly, the Hanover Police are taking proactive measures to ensure the safety of senior citizens in the parish. Despite a relatively low incidence of crimes against seniors, police are not taking any chances, emphasizing the importance of community engagement and education.
At a recent meeting of the Hanover Parish Library’s monthly “Seniors Coffee and Conversations,” Sergeant Darrall Ellis, the communications liaison officer for the Hanover Police, delivered crucial crime-prevention strategies specifically designed for seniors. The event, held in October, focused on “Crime Prevention Strategies for Seniors,” aiming to empower elderly residents with knowledge to enhance their safety.
“While Hanover has a low rate of crimes against seniors, we must remain vigilant,” Ellis stated. “Crimes against seniors are a growing concern in other parishes, and the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) is committed to safeguarding everyone, including our most vulnerable populations.”
During his presentation, Ellis encouraged seniors to feel comfortable approaching police officers for assistance, challenging the traditional perception of police as an intimidating force. “We are working hard to change that narrative,” he asserted, highlighting the JCF’s efforts to humanize police training and create a more supportive environment for all citizens.
In addition to personal safety tips, Ellis emphasized the importance of community connections and home safety measures. He urged seniors to collaborate with law enforcement to combat vulnerabilities to crimes like burglary, scams, and fraud. “Maintaining our low rates of technological fraud and other crimes affecting seniors requires continuous partnerships between citizens and the police,” he noted.
The Hanover Police are dedicated to fostering a sense of security and reassurance among the elderly community. For further inquiries or assistance, seniors are encouraged to reach out directly to the Hanover Police, who are ready to serve and protect.
