Gunman Killed in Four-Hour Stand-off with Security Forces in Mandeville

Tense moments gr gripped the town of Mandeville on Tuesday morning as an armed gunman engaged the police and military in a fierce four-hour standoff at an apartment complex on Caledonia Road.

The stand-off, which drew dozens of onlookers and brought traffic to a crawl, was led by Head of the Manchester Police Division, Superintendent Carey Duncan, with support from Specialised Operations and members of the Jamaica Defence Force.

Earlier in the morning, residents were jolted by a barrage of gunfire shortly after 7:30 a.m. when 39-year-old Adrian Bernard, a former employee at Ebony Park Academy, was riddled with bullets as he drove his Toyota Corolla along lower Caledonia Road. Bernard’s vehicle crashed into the back of a Toyota Prado near a popular auto parts store. He was later pronounced dead at the Mandeville Regional Hospital.

Investigators say the killing is linked to a dispute over eggs.

Not long after, intelligence led police to an apartment complex in the vicinity, where the alleged shooter — known only by the alias “Brown Man” — had reportedly taken cover.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Calvin Allen, Head of Police Area Three, confirmed that the ensuing standoff lasted more than four hours, as heavily armed police teams from across Manchester, SWAT units, and JDF personnel converged on the scene.

Live social media streams captured the dramatic moments, showing convoys of police vehicles, SWAT vans, and a JDF tanker parked outside the building. Images circulating online also reveal walls peppered with bullet holes, bearing evidence of the intense firefight.

Despite repeated appeals for surrender, ACP Allen says the suspect refused to give up and was eventually shot and killed during the exchange of gunfire.

Following the operation, the security forces seized a multi-caliber omni hybrid rifle, a Beretta pistol, and more than 450 assorted rounds of ammunition.

ACP Allen says investigations into both the fatal shooting of Bernard and the subsequent standoff remain ongoing.
