Greensboro, NC — A joyous wedding day turned into a tragedy when 37-year-old Tyrek Burton was shot and killed just hours after marrying his longtime partner, Kiara, in a senseless act of violence fueled by road rage. The shocking incident occurred on Saturday, October 12, 2024, outside the Barber Park Event Center in Greensboro, where the couple’s wedding reception was being held.
According to witnesses, Burton briefly stepped outside of the venue during the reception. He was then approached by a man who accused him of cutting him off in traffic earlier that day. In an attempt to deescalate the situation, Burton reportedly responded, “If I did, I’m sorry.” Despite this, the stranger opened fire, shooting Burton multiple times in front of his new bride and other family members.

Burton’s sister, Brittany, confirmed that the family had no prior connection to the gunman. “My brother didn’t know this man at all,” she said. “This was a complete random stranger, and he shot him in cold blood.” Emergency responders from the Greensboro Police Department arrived at the scene, but Burton was pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspect fled the scene and, as of now, remains at large. The Greensboro Police Department has launched a full investigation but has not released further details regarding the suspect’s identity. Burton’s murder was part of a wave of violent road rage incidents in North Carolina that same day; another man was also shot and killed in a separate road-rage altercation.
Tyrek Burton leaves behind his new wife, Kiara, and four daughters. Friends and family have set up a GoFundMe to support the family in the aftermath of this tragic loss. “He was a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend,” said his cousin. “What was supposed to be the happiest day of his life was tragically cut short.”
The senseless killing has left the local community reeling, with many calling for justice and an end to the rising tide of gun violence in the region.
Authorities continue to investigate, and the public is urged to come forward with any information that could lead to the arrest of the shooter.
