Moneague, St Ann – Shock and sorrow continue to grip the community of Swamp District, Moneague, after the brutal killing of two brothers, ages one and three, whose lifeless bodies were discovered with stab wounds in bushes near their home on Wednesday morning.
The children have been identified as one-year-old Ameir Saunders and three-year-old Shamair Henry.
Police confirmed that their father, a hotel worker, remains in custody as investigators probe the gruesome incident. Reports are that the man, who allegedly consumed a large amount of ganja before the attack, had earlier been seen attacking the toddlers with a pair of scissors.
Their mother had rushed to the Moneague Police Station on Tuesday evening to raise the alarm, but despite a late-night search involving lawmen, residents, and members of the JDF, the children were not found until Wednesday morning.
Area residents expressed disbelief, describing the father as a “loving and caring parent.” Police, however, maintain that he remains a prime suspect.
The grieving mother, who suffered minor injuries in a scuffle with the father, has since received medical attention and will be provided with counselling and assistance from the Victim Support Unit, according to Acting Senior Superintendent Rohan Elliott of the St Ann Police.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness, in a statement issued Wednesday afternoon, said the Government and people of Jamaica are “deeply shaken and heartbroken by the tragic incident.”
“I extend my deepest condolences to the grieving mother, family members, and the wider community, who must now grapple with this unimaginable pain and loss. No parent should ever have to endure such a tragedy, and as a country we mourn alongside them,” Holness said.
Police investigators from the Major Investigations Division (MID) and the St Ann Police Division remain on the scene, piecing together the final moments of a tragedy that has left an entire parish reeling in grief.
