Montego Bay, St. James: Over 13,000 residents in Green Pond and surrounding communities in St. James now have access to improved primary healthcare services following the completion of a $30 million renovation project at the Green Pond Health Centre.
The upgrade, undertaken as part of the government’s Operation Refresh initiative, included significant improvements to the facility. These enhancements encompassed the expansion of the building to accommodate air-conditioned medical records and consultation rooms, the enclosure and air-conditioning of the main waiting area, the installation of perimeter fencing, the paving of the car park, and general painting and maintenance.
The renovated health centre now offers a more comfortable and welcoming environment for patients and staff. It provides a range of essential services, including maternal and child healthcare (antenatal, postnatal, child health, and family planning), wound care, and dressing services.
Health and Wellness Minister, Dr. Christopher Tufton, who officially reopened the facility, emphasized the government’s commitment to revitalizing Jamaica’s healthcare infrastructure. “Our objective is to encourage more persons to access preventative healthcare services at their community health centres to reduce the burden on hospitals,” Dr. Tufton stated.
The Green Pond Health Centre is the 13th health centre in St. James to benefit from Operation Refresh, with 30 more facilities slated for upgrades in the coming months. The government is also recruiting 300 additional doctors to strengthen the healthcare workforce.
Parish Manager for St. James Health Services, Lennox Wallace, highlighted the significant investments in medical equipment, including nine new dental chairs, further enhancing the quality of care provided at health centres across the parish.
Mayor of Montego Bay, Councillor Richard Vernon, emphasized the crucial role of accessible and well-equipped community health centres in promoting the overall health and well-being of the population. He commended the dedication of healthcare workers in advancing the sector and improving the lives of residents in St. James.
The renovated Green Pond Health Centre represents a significant step forward in improving access to quality healthcare for residents in the community and sets a positive precedent for the ongoing revitalization of Jamaica’s healthcare infrastructure.
