The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) has confirmed that a police officer involved in the fatal Granville police shooting on Sunday afternoon has been immediately interdicted as investigations continue into the incident that left a woman dead in St. James.
The deceased, known by the alias “Buju,” was reportedly shot during unrest in the Granville community, where residents had gathered in protest over last week’s fatal police shooting of a 17-year-old boy.
According to reports, police personnel were monitoring the demonstration when tensions escalated. During the disturbance, the woman allegedly became involved in an altercation with members of the security forces before gunshots were heard.
In a statement released Sunday evening, the JCF High Command said it was deeply concerned about the circumstances surrounding the Granville police shooting and confirmed that the officer connected to the incident has been removed from operational duties pending the outcome of ongoing investigations.
The fatal shooting has triggered widespread reactions across Granville and on social media, with residents calling for accountability and a transparent probe into the incident.
Authorities say the matter will be investigated by the appropriate oversight bodies while investigators continue collecting witness statements and reviewing the sequence of events that led to the woman’s death.
Meanwhile, tensions remain high in sections of the St. James community as residents continue to react to the latest fatal police-related incident.
