Minister with responsibility for Technology, Dr Andrew Wheatley, has issued a strong warning against the misuse of artificial intelligence, noting that offenders could face lengthy prison sentences under proposed changes to the Cybercrimes Act.
Speaking on the matter, Dr Wheatley said the planned amendments would allow for penalties of up to 20 years for individuals who deliberately use AI for criminal or harmful activities. He urged Jamaicans to avoid engaging in the technology for unlawful purposes.
His comments come amid international developments, as the United Kingdom prepares to criminalise the creation of sexual images generated by artificial intelligence without a person’s consent. The UK government is expected to move forward with the legislation by the end of the week.
The proposed law follows concerns over the growing use of the Grok AI feature on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, to create such content. In response, British media regulator Ofcom and authorities in the US state of California have launched separate investigations into the tool.
Dr Wheatley has expressed support for the criminalisation of these practices, aligning Jamaica’s proposed approach with efforts being taken overseas to curb the abuse of artificial intelligence.
