MIAMI, FL – American sprint star and former world 100-meter champion Fred Kerley has withdrawn from this weekend’s Grand Slam Track meet in Miami after being arrested on a battery charge, event organizers confirmed Friday.
The 29-year-old athlete, who claimed 100m gold at the 2022 World Championships and earned Olympic silver in Tokyo, was taken into custody Thursday by police in Broward County, Florida. Arrest records indicate Kerley was charged with “touch or strike battery” and remained in custody as of Friday morning.
The incident reportedly occurred at the official hotel for the Grand Slam Track meet, the second stop in Michael Johnson’s newly launched track and field circuit. News of Kerley’s arrest first surfaced via Letsrun.com, a site dedicated to track and field coverage.
“Fred Kerley was arrested last night,” organizers of the Grand Slam Track meet said in a statement. “The matter is under active investigation, and all inquiries should be directed to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office. Fred will not compete this weekend. We have no further comment at this time.”
This latest arrest adds to a string of legal troubles for Kerley in recent months. In January, he was detained by Miami Beach police after a confrontation that reportedly led to him being tasered. He was later charged with battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct.
Also in January, Kerley faced a separate charge of domestic violence by strangulation, stemming from an alleged incident in May 2024.
Once considered one of the brightest stars in American sprinting, Kerley’s off-track issues now cast a shadow over his athletic career. His absence from the Miami meet will be a significant blow to the new Grand Slam Track circuit, which has been working to attract top-tier talent and build momentum in the sport.
Kerley has yet to issue a public statement regarding his most recent arrest.
