John Prescott, the former Deputy Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, has passed away at the age of 85. Prescott, who served under Prime Minister Tony Blair from 1997 to 2007, was a key figure in British politics for over three decades.
Prescott, known for his down-to-earth approach and fierce advocacy for the working class, was a prominent Labour politician who held the role of Deputy PM throughout Blair’s tenure. He also served as the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport, and the Regions, where he was involved in several major initiatives, including the implementation of the UK’s regional development policies and significant reforms to public transport.
In a statement released by his family, they said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Prescott. A loving father and grandfather, John’s contributions to the Labour Party and his role in shaping modern Britain will not be forgotten. He was a man of great integrity, who always fought for what he believed in.”
Prescott was born in 1938 in Prestatyn, Wales, and became a member of the House of Commons in 1970. He gained national attention as the Labour MP for Kingston upon Hull East and later as a key player in Blair’s government. Prescott’s time in office was marked by his outspoken personality, including his famous physical altercation with a protestor during the 2001 general election campaign, which solidified his reputation as a man unafraid to stand his ground.
Following his time in office, Prescott continued to be active in politics and public life, offering commentary on various issues and supporting Labour causes. He also wrote several books, including a memoir detailing his political career.
Tributes have poured in from across the political spectrum, with both current and former politicians praising his commitment to public service and his unapologetic dedication to his values. Tony Blair, the former Prime Minister, described Prescott as a “loyal and steadfast colleague,” adding, “He was a key figure in our government and a constant champion for the Labour Party.”
Prescott is survived by his wife, Pauline, and their children. His passing marks the end of an era for British politics, as he was one of the most recognisable figures of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
