A senior police officer is in custody following the seizure of a large quantity of cocaine during a targeted anti-narcotics operation in Kingston on Thursday night.
The accused, a 51-year-old police inspector assigned to administrative duties at the Counter-Terrorism and Organised Crime Investigation Branch, was arrested along with two other men during an operation conducted by the Firearms and Narcotics Investigation Division (FNID). Investigators estimate the illicit drugs seized have a street value of up to $100 million.
The operation unfolded at a bar in the Woodford Park area of Kingston 4, where FNID personnel, acting on intelligence, carried out surveillance linked to suspected drug activity. At the location, officers identified three vehicles connected to patrons at the establishment, including one reportedly belonging to the police inspector.
The two other individuals taken into custody are a 43-year-old member of the Jamaica Defence Force and a 37-year-old mechanic. All three men reside in St Catherine and were arrested on reasonable suspicion of breaches of the Dangerous Drugs Act. Their identities are being withheld pending the laying of formal charges.
According to FNID, the owners of the vehicles were asked to consent to searches. While two of the vehicles were examined, investigators reported that the police inspector initially declined to allow access to his vehicle. A senior FNID officer was summoned to the scene, and upon her arrival, the inspector reportedly disclosed that cocaine was inside the car.
All three vehicles were secured and transported to FNID headquarters, where a search of the inspector’s vehicle was conducted in his presence. Investigators reportedly discovered five rectangular packages concealed in a white plastic bag on the rear floor of the vehicle. The parcels, wrapped in masking tape and clear plastic, contained a white powdery substance resembling cocaine.
The drugs were found to weigh approximately 5.8 kilogrammes, or 12.5 pounds.
During the operation, FNID also seized a Glock service pistol, three magazines, and 53 rounds of ammunition, along with the inspector’s Jamaica Constabulary Force identification, a holster, and a Galaxy Note 9 cellular phone. The remaining two vehicles were sealed and secured at headquarters pending further examination.
Investigators later conducted a follow-up search at the inspector’s residence, which reportedly yielded no illegal items.
The police inspector is currently being held at the Half-Way Tree Police Lock-Up as investigations continue.
