OLD HARBOUR, St. Catherine — Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining Floyd Green is encouraging more young Jamaicans to pursue careers in agriculture, describing the sector as a major avenue for entrepreneurship, wealth creation and national development.
Speaking at the New Testament Church of God Kingdom Builders Business Expo in Old Harbour, St. Catherine, Green urged participants to look beyond traditional farming and recognise the many business opportunities available throughout the agricultural value chain.
He said agriculture extends far beyond crop production, offering careers in transportation, logistics, supply chain management and agricultural technology.
“When you think about agriculture, I want you to think about the full value system that is connected… there is so much potential and opportunity in this agriculture space,” the minister said.
Green stressed that agriculture remains one of the world’s most essential professions because food production is vital regardless of economic conditions.
He also challenged the perception that farming is not profitable, pointing to local farmers earning significant incomes through high-value crops and livestock production.
The minister highlighted several government initiatives designed to increase youth participation in the sector, including support for livestock farming, aquaculture and improved access to agricultural lands.
He noted that 25 per cent of government-owned agricultural land is reserved for young people, who can access it at preferential rates.
Eligible young farmers also receive incentives such as free land preparation for up to two acres, agricultural inputs and continued support during the early stages of production.
Green encouraged young Jamaicans to embrace agriculture as a serious business opportunity capable of transforming lives.
“My message to you is really [to] rethink agriculture. Agriculture can truly move you from farm to fortune,” he said.
