Fire and Life Safety Awareness Week 2026

Fire Brigade Plans Regional Expos for Safety Awareness Week

The Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB) will take fire-prevention education into communities across the island during Fire and Life Safety Awareness Week, which runs from October 25 to 31.

Four regional expositions will headline the observance, giving members of the public opportunities to meet firefighters, watch practical demonstrations and learn how to reduce fire risks.

This year’s theme is “Safe Homes, Safe Communities: The Power of Prevention”.

Speaking at the media launch at the JFB’s Kingston headquarters on October 21, Commissioner Stewart Beckford said preventing fires begins with deliberate action in the home.

He stressed that vigilance and prevention are essential to protecting communities, pointing to the lives lost to fires in Jamaica.

Deputy Commissioner responsible for Fire Safety, Prevention and Investigation, Kevin Haughton, said the Week’s activities will strengthen community partnerships and encourage people to identify hazards before emergencies occur.

The observance begins with a national church service at the International Worship Centre in Mount Salem, Montego Bay, on Sunday, October 25, at 9:30 a.m.

An eight-page newspaper supplement will follow on Monday, October 26, featuring fire-safety information, the Brigade’s work and practical advice for households and businesses.

The regional expositions, each starting at 10:00 a.m., are scheduled for:

  • Tuesday, October 27: Independence Park, Savanna-la-Mar, Westmoreland.
  • Wednesday, October 28: Claude Stewart Park, Port Maria, St. Mary.
  • Thursday, October 29: Emancipation Park, Kingston.
  • Friday, October 30: Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Linstead, St. Catherine.

Haughton said the events will help the Brigade take safety education directly to the public, with an emphasis on recognising and addressing potential dangers.

JFB divisions will also conduct community activities throughout the Week, supported by messages on traditional and social media.

Topics will include electrical safety, safe cooking, smoke alarms, emergency preparedness and home fire-safety plans. Businesses and institutions will also be encouraged to maintain appropriate safety arrangements and comply with established standards.

The Week concludes with the Firefighters’ Ball at Sandals Dunn’s River in St. Ann on Saturday, October 31, beginning at 7:00 p.m
