Dr. Karen Phillips, the physician who previously warned that Vybz Kartel could face severe health risks without surgery for Graves’ disease, emphasized the critical need for “medical management” now that the famed entertainer has been released from prison.
The entertainer, Adidja Palmer, had his health status considered by the Court of Appeal, leading to the decision not to retry him and his co-appellants for the murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams. Justice Marva McDonald-Bishop, president of the Court of Appeal, cited the medical issues detailed in a report indicating Palmer’s declining health while incarcerated.
As a result of the ruling, Kartel, Shawn ‘Shawn Storm’ Campbell, and Andre St John were released from custody. However, the fourth co-defendant, Kahira Jones, remained in custody due to an 18-year sentence for a separate crime.
Phillips’ medical report, dated May 2, 2024, revealed that Kartel’s heart function had significantly deteriorated, with a 20 percent loss in capacity compared to the previous year, increasing his risk of a heart attack. Observers noted noticeable physical changes in Kartel, particularly facial swelling, a common symptom of Graves’ disease.
When asked to comment on the entertainer’s health, Phillips reiterated that Kartel suffers from heart disease related to his Graves’ disease, which also includes heart failure. She explained that the facial swelling and protruding eyes are symptoms of his condition.
Regarding Kartel’s chances of recovery, Phillips mentioned the need for ongoing medical management, cardiology evaluations, and further treatment as required. She noted that the entertainer would also need definitive treatment for Graves’ disease.
Fans eagerly anticipating Kartel’s return to the music scene received no direct comment from Phillips on the possibility. She indicated that his ability to resume his career would depend on the success of his ongoing medical management and treatment.
