The family of 74-year-old farmer Anthony “Tony” Thompson is still awaiting answers from the police two weeks after he was brutally murdered at his farm in Chatsworth, Maroon Town, St James.
Thompson was reportedly killed between September 9 and 10 by an unknown person or persons who had entered his property. His remains were discovered by relatives on September 12.
His sister, Greta Ennis, said the family has received no updates from the police since the murder scene was processed.
Ennis said the lack of communication has left relatives anxious about the progress of the investigation.
“I do not know if they are making any progress, and I do not know what the police are doing,” she said.
She added that while praedial larceny has been a longstanding problem in Chatsworth, Thompson’s killing was the first murder the family was aware of in the community.
Ennis said relatives suspect Thompson may have known the person responsible for his death, but acknowledged that the circumstances remain unclear.
Attempts to obtain an update from St James police commander Senior Superintendent Eron Samuels were unsuccessful.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Glenford Miller, who commands Area One, said the family should visit the police station to seek information on the status of the investigation.
Miller, however, said he encourages police officers to provide affected families with updates whenever there is new information, including when a suspect has been apprehended.
As of September 10, the St James Police Division had recorded 45 murders, four more than the corresponding period last year. The parish recorded 58 murders in 2025.
