Falmouth Market Car Park to Get Security Cameras Amid Car Theft Concerns

FALMOUTH, Trelawny — In response to a growing number of vehicle thefts, including the recent theft of a police officer’s car, the municipal car park at the Falmouth Market is set to be retrofitted with security cameras, according to Mayor of Falmouth, Collen Gager.

Speaking with the media, Mayor Gager expressed serious concern about the ongoing incidents, particularly during the town’s popular “Bend Down Market” days, which he described as a vital part of Falmouth’s cultural and commercial legacy.

“We have had a number of cars being stolen from the park. The latest was that of a police officer,” Gager said. “Bend Down Market has been going on for years. It is part of the town’s legacy, we cannot allow culprits to destroy this legacy. Hence, we will be installing cameras and increase the security detail.”

In addition to boosting surveillance and security, the mayor also revealed that repair work is planned for the facility to improve conditions for market-goers.

“We have identified some funds which have been earmarked for repairs. It is not all that is needed but the intention is to increase the comfort level of buyers and sellers,” he added.

The Falmouth Market, which was built by the Port Authority of Jamaica, officially opened in 2019 and has since served as a hub for commerce in the town. The upgrades are part of efforts to enhance public safety and preserve the market’s significance to the local economy and heritage.
