A man alleged to be a high-ranking member of the notorious 440 Drive Gang was fatally shot during a confrontation with police in Bridgeport, Portmore, on Tuesday night.
The deceased, 24-year-old Alex Madden of a Kingston 11 address, was previously discharged from the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) in 2024 due to alleged ties to the gang.
Police reports indicate that around 9:00 p.m., law enforcement officers on an operation in Bridgeport attempted to apprehend Madden. He allegedly confronted the officers with a firearm, prompting them to return fire. Madden was struck and later pronounced dead at the Spanish Town Hospital at 9:15 p.m.
A HiPoint 9mm Luger pistol, along with a magazine containing six rounds of ammunition, was reportedly seized at the scene.
Madden was reportedly a key figure in the 440 Drive Gang, which has been linked to a series of violent crimes in the St. Andrew South Police Division. Police have connected him to three murders and a shooting since November 2024. He was also wanted for questioning in relation to an attempted murder.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has opened an inquiry into the shooting.
As investigations continue, authorities remain focused on dismantling criminal networks fueling violence in the region.
