St Catherine, Jamaica – A 72-year-old man received a 10-year prison sentence on Thursday after pleading guilty to multiple charges of rape and sexual touching involving children. Justice Bertram Morrison handed down the sentence in the Home Circuit Court.
The man was given 10 years for the rape charges and five years for sexual touching. However, these sentences will run concurrently, meaning he will serve a total of 10 years behind bars. His name has also been recommended for inclusion on the Sex Offenders Registry.
He had entered his guilty plea last October in the St. Catherine Circuit Court.
The court was told that in 2021, the elderly man committed these offenses against three underage girls who had been entrusted to his care. The crimes came to light in February 2022 when one of the victims traveled to another parish to visit a relative and disclosed her harrowing experience.
A report was subsequently filed with the Linstead police, prompting an investigation by the Centre for Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse (CISOCA). The man was then arrested and charged in connection with the incidents.
