Member of Parliament for Westmoreland Central, Dwayne Vaz, has indicated that he is prepared to take legal action against Savanna-la-Mar Councillor Julian Chang, alleging that comments she made publicly are defamatory and damaging to his reputation.
Vaz, through his attorneys, has issued a formal letter demanding that Councillor Chang issue a public retraction and apology following remarks she made during a recent radio interview. The statements reportedly included allegations of sexual harassment and claims of political interference, which Vaz has firmly denied.
According to the correspondence, Vaz’s legal team described the allegations as false and without factual foundation, noting that the statements have caused significant harm and continue to affect his standing.
The attorneys have given Councillor Chang until January 30 to withdraw the statements and publicly apologise. Failure to do so, the letter warns, could result in legal proceedings being initiated against her for defamation.
Councillor Chang, who represents the Savanna-la-Mar Division for the People’s National Party, has maintained her claims, stating that the remarks were based on her personal experiences.
The issue has generated public discussion, with the PNP Women’s Movement expressing concern about the allegations, while calls continue for the matter to be addressed through appropriate legal processes.
